Heitkamp holds a 3-point lead over Congressman Rick Berg (45% Heitkamp, 42% Berg). Heitkamp enjoys a 17-point advantage among independents (48% Heitkamp, 31% Berg) and a 35-point lead among moderates(59% Heitkamp, 24% Berg), and garnersnearly fourtimesas many Republican votes (11%) as Berg gets from Democrats(3%).
North Dakotans have a long history of splitting their tickets in Presidential elections. Indeed, North Dakota has produced different party winners for Senate and President in half the elections where both were on the ballot—more often than any state but one. For example, in 2000, when Al Gore was losing the state by 28 points, Senator Kent Conrad won by 23 points.
While Heitkamp has successfully weathered millions of dollars in attack ads, with a majority of voters continuing to view her favorably(50% favorable, 38% unfavorable)Berg’s unfavorables now exceed his favorables, leaving his image at a new nadir. Only 42% of North Dakota voters view him favorably compared to 43% who hold unfavorable opinions. His job performance ratings are also as weak as they have been all year, with only 33% rendering positive evaluations and 55% holding negative views. Independents are even soureronBerg, with a 50% viewing him unfavorably and 60% rating his performance in office negatively. - THe Mellman Group, 10/22/12
Mellman surveyed 600 likely voters between October 16-19.
Two years ago, the Republicans lucked out by nominating their most popular Republican politician, Governor John Hoeven (R), for U.S. Senate causing Democratic Senator Byron Dorgan to retire leaving no one for the Democrats to run. It was a race the Republicans had locked up and they thought they would strike gold again with Berg but their golden boy turned out to be a corrupt, anti-choice polished turd. Berg wants to put women seeking abortions and doctors who perform them in jail and is a puppet for the real estate business, especially for his own business, Goldmark:

We are on track to holding onto Kent Conrad's seat. Democrats lucked out big this year with Heitkamp who has a great record as North Dakota's Attorney General and is highly liked by the majority of North Dakota voters. North Dakota, like Arizona, Indiana, West Virginia, Missouri and Montana are split ticket states. Romney may have convinced the majority of voters in these states that he's the right choice to be in the White House but guys like Berg, Todd Akin, Jeff Flake, Rchard Mourdock, Johne Raese and Denny Rehberg are struggling to convince voters in their home states that they are looking out for their interests. Heitkamp may not be a progressive like Sherrod Brown or Bernie Sanders but her views on Wall Street are in line with Dorgan's and we need more like-minded people like Dorgan in the Senate. Lets keep the Senate blue and help guarantee Heitkamp's victory in November:
